April showers bring May flowers or our case May showers. Aren’t we glad the rain stopped finally? Lets hope it stays away all weekend so we can start this summer off right.
Even though summer doesn’t start until the Summer equinox, Memorial Day Weekend marks the beginning of the summer season for most of the United States. People dust off their swimsuits and SPF 30, summer bbqs and pool parties take over the weekends, and the vacation that you’ve been waiting all year for is only a few weeks away. There are so many different things about summer that make it such a unique time, but there is one thing we can all agree on that puts the cherry on top of our summer Sunday:
An ultimate summer playlist.
Music is the unsung hero of summer in our eyes. All it takes is one song to set the mood, and summer is the perfect time to explore different music tastes. We think this playlist is perfect for driving down the road with your windows down, at a party with all of our friends, and making s’mores around a bonfire. Here at Roxanne Kelly Designs, we have quite the eclectic taste in music, ranging from well known pop singers, to lesser known indie artists. No matter the genre, we know how to appreciate a good song when we hear one.
Stay - Zedd feat Alessia Cara
This catchy song immediately had us bopping our heads back and forth to the beat. It’s infectious rhythm and lyrics are perfect for the summertime. Alessia Cara’s voice once again shines on this song, and we predict this song will be stuck in your head in a good way.
Senorita - Justin Timberlake
There was no way we could do a summer playlist without mentioning Justin Timberlake. There are way too many songs of his that we could have used, but this throwback song to his first solo album always makes us want to get up and dance.
Hard Times - Paramore
Paramore has changed their sound and aesthetic since their time as the popular pop punk band of the mid 2000’s. While their older music is great and perfect to blast in your car, their newest song is a breath of fresh air and a welcomed change in musical direction. This song is just too catchy and dance worthy to ignore.
Sunday Morning (Questlove Remix) - Maroon 5
It’s no secret that we may or may not be a little bit obsessed with Maroon 5. Our love for them pretty much knows no bounds, but this version of Sunday Morning is perfectly rendered by Questlove. This is good for those summer rainy days, or whenever you’re taking a lazy sunday to relax at home.
That’s What I Like - Burno Mars
We bet if you turn on the radio right now, there’s going to be at least one station playing this song. Bruno Mars is an underrated artist who puts out hit after hit, and we cannot get enough of it. We’ll keep drinking the koolaid that he keeps serving, because each song of his is just that good.
P.S. If you ever get a chance to see him live, seriously go. The energy of his shows in intoxicating.
Body Like A Backroad - Sam Hunt
We also may be a little bit obsessed with Sam Hunt too (don’t tell Adam Levine we said that). Can you imagine being the girl he writes his songs for? Swoon, his lyrics are just too good & we can’t wait to end our summer seeing him live. Body like a Back road is the perfect, catchy country song for those late night drives on our windy country roads with the windows down.
Green Light - Lorde
This is a more pop direction that we’re used to seeing Lorde presenting, but it seems to be working for her since we absolutely love this song. She explores different sounds and rhythm techniques in this song, and we cannot wait to hear more from her next album.
Life Itself - Glass Animals
Glass Animals is a band from the UK that is becoming prominent on the indie music scene. While their whole music collection showcases their talents immensely, this song has an infection beat and rhythmic pattern that keeps us moving.
Genghis Kahn - Miike Snow
The video for this song is just about as perfect as the song itself. It’s been awhile since a music video actually portrayed a story that we’re interested in seeing more from. The song has a lot of different musical inspirations in it, which easily makes the listener want to hear more from the band.
Be Your Shadow - The Wombats
Here is another band from the UK, this time with more pop indie influences. This is another good song to listen to in multiple different situations. The video has an interesting story to it, which adds to the charm of the song
Are You That Somebody - Aaliyah
The beat of this song alone makes it worthy to be on our playlist. The baby cries in the background are a little weird, but somehow makes the song. The song was written for the Dr. Dolittle Movie, and is one of Aaliyah’s most popular songs. Ahhh we miss her.
Good as Hell - Lizzo
Here at Roxanne Kelly Designs, we believe every person is perfect and wonderful in their own unique way, and this song is a good representation on body positivity and owning your self worth. Though the situation in this song revolves around a breakup, the overall message is that of loving yourself for who you are, and to pamper yourself when you deserve it most. We think this song is great song to get ready for a night out with friends, or on those days when you just want to feel yourself.
Anna Sun - Walk the Moon
Walk the Moon became widely known after their hit “Shut Up and Dance” became the go to summer song back in 2015. While that song is extremely successful, “Anna Sun” was one of their first songs to bring them notoriety. This video was self made by the band and their friends, which adds to the eclectic charm to the song. We love the youthfulness in this song, and it is a great song to listen to driving down the road on a hot summer day.
We can't wait to see who owns the summer anthem of the year, who do think it will be? My moneys on Justin Bieber. We might be a little old to be a Bielber (sp?) but I'm pretty sure after the Purpose Album & his new song we've totally fallen for him. His beats are just too good, they definitely get your moving and how can you not love DJ Khaled?
DJ Khaled - I'm the One ft. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne
One last note, we want to Thank all those who have and currently serve to keep our country safe. Without you we wouldn't have the freedom to enjoy the start of summer with our family and friends. I don't think we can ever thank you enough for all you do.
